Burning Man, for those who haven’t seen the outlandish photos and awe-inspiring installations of Black Rock, is a New Age festival transforming the arid and empty landscapes of the Nevada desert in occasion of the summer solstice. With a strong sense of community, crowds flock to the pop-up metropolis created and dismantled each year, drawing participation from artists and activists alike in a one-of-a-kind kermesse.

Burning Man 2018 unraveled around the theme I, Robot, asking participants to explore technology’s incessant growth and its impact on the world. Artists responded with inspirational installations tinged with a daring sense of sci-fi between gigantic robots and philosophical interpretations.

These are a few of our favorite Burning Man 2018 installations, directly from the Instagram profiles of those who experienced the event firsthand.

1

The Orb

Gigantic, reflective, and inflatable, the sphere from Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange boasts a 25.5 meter diameter, supported by a steel mast raised 32 meters in the air. The temporary airborne monument was raised over the campgrounds, helping burners orient themselves during the event. A crowdfunding campaign was also launched on Indiegogo to back the project, and although funds of $50,000 weren’t entirely met, designers continued with The Orb all the same.

2

Galaxia

Galaxia, designed by Arthur Mamou-Mani, celebrates hope, standing in the face of a deep unknown universe swirling with galaxies. The sculpture represents a universe connecting living beings in a single entity, formed by 20 wood trusses converging on a single point, creating diverse paths to explore or read a book in peace.

3

Cosmic Voyager

Cosmic Voyager by Martin Taylor and The Chromaforms Collective is a giant marine turtle realized in polished stainless steel. Resting on the turtle’s shell is a city protected by a large transparent dome. As an ancient protector of this world in Hindu, Chinese, and American Indian mythology, the cosmic creature’s ancient symbolism is met with a futuristic and reflective design evoking visions of a “spaceship Earth” traveling through the cosmos.

Bloom

Peter Hazel and his team created a jellyfish soaring 40 feet into the air. From afar, the construction appears as a single large creature, but on further examination, the piece is composed of thousands of small jellyfish swimming in a sea of tentacles and light. Visitors can climb to the top of the dome to catch a new perspective of the event and incredible panoramas of the surrounding desert.

5

Lodestar

Lodestar, or polar star, by Randy Polumbo, is made from an old military jet and features a “techno-organic flower” growing from the fuselage. The piece is interpreted as a collection spot for human pollinators and impressed crowds with its realistic design.

6

Perpetual Consumption Apparatus

Perpetual Consumption Apparatus from Clayton Blake Art rises 10 meters in the air with steel shopping carts assembled in a spiral, representing an infinite loop. The installation was made to be climbed on to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding nature from the consumerism criticized by the piece itself.

Rainbow Bridge

Debuting at Burning Man 2018, Josh Zubkoff presented Rainbow Bridge, a multicolor structure stretching over 100 feet that emerges from the morning fog and dazzles with LED lights in the dark night. The peaceful giant was a perfect spot to take a walk, a timeout, or to meet with friends.
